Chocolate syrup, for drizzling (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Crust
In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, chopped nuts (if using), melted butter, and sugar. Mix until the crumbs are uniformly coated and the mixture resembles wet sand. Press this mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of an ungreased 9×13-inch baking dish. Use the bottom of a measuring cup to compact it into a solid, unified layer. Place in the refrigerator to set while you prepare the filling.
Step 2: Make the Cream Cheese Filling
In a large mixing bowl (or using a stand mixer), beat the softened cream cheese on medium speed until completely smooth and lump-free, about 2 minutes. Add the sifted confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract. Beat on low until incorporated, then on medium-high until fluffy, about 2 more minutes. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in the entire 8-ounce tub of thawed whipped topping until no white streaks remain. Be careful not to deflate the mixture.
Step 3: Assemble the First Creamy Layer
Remove the crust from the refrigerator. Spread the cream cheese filling evenly over the crust, smoothing it to the edges. This layer acts as a crucial moisture barrier.
Step 4: Layer the Bananas
In a small bowl, toss the banana slices with the lemon juice to coat them lightly. This prevents them from turning brown. Arrange the banana slices in a single, even layer over the cream cheese filling.
Step 5: Add the Pineapple and Strawberry Layers
Spread the VERY well-drained crushed pineapple evenly over the banana layer. Next, carefully spread the strawberry pie filling (or homemade strawberry topping) evenly over the pineapple layer. If using, scatter fresh strawberry slices over the pie filling.
Step 6: Apply the Final Whipped Topping
Spread the second 8-ounce tub of thawed whipped topping evenly over the strawberry layer, creating a smooth, white top. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 6 hours, but ideally overnight. This chilling time is non-negotiable; it allows the dessert to set firmly, the flavors to meld, and makes slicing clean and beautiful.
Step 7: The Grand Finale – Garnish
Just before serving, garnish the dessert. Sprinkle the grated chocolate shavings and chopped nuts evenly over the whipped topping. Place maraschino cherries at even intervals (to mark serving squares). If desired, drizzle thin lines of chocolate syrup over the top in a classic banana split pattern.
Step 8: Slice and Serve
Use a sharp knife to cut into squares. For the cleanest slices, dip the knife in hot water and wipe it clean between cuts. Serve chilled, ensuring each piece gets a bit of every glorious layer
